Burgundy, in its varied avatars, boasts many names. At its darkest, the name is oxblood—macabre in name yet seductive in appearance. Marsala, the Pantone Colour of 2015, is an earthier shade, sometimes dulled dubbed, but loved for its full-bodied mood. And then there’s burgundy itself, dark and robust, mysterious and sensual, much like the fine French wine from which it derives its name. The jewel-toned colour makes frequent appearances this winter, in the collections of Maison Margiela, Dior Homme, and Roland Mouret, and closer home, Manish Malhotra and Ilk by Shikha and Vinit. Deepika Padukone paired a chunky Zara dress with Tom Ford pumps in the hue during promotions for Tamasha, while Selena Gomez’s sleek look at the AMA 2015—a shimmering dress and smoky plum peepers—catapulted her instantly to the event’s best-dressed list. Burgundy has an impactful presence on luxe fabrics like silk, velvet, lace, and leather, ideal for year-end parties. Opt for a muted tone for the day and pair with black, white, or navy. Or take the beauty route with a dark lip colour aka Demi Lovato.l
