If your idea of a perfect getaway includes a view of the mountains or a day on the beach, you might be initially disappointed with Bangkok. At first glance, it may seem like a spruced up version of our very own metropolitan cities, but look closely and the Land of Smiles offers numerous pleasures. And we don’t just mean the Thai massages (more on that below) and Muay Thai matches. History buffs will love the many historical treasures on display while the city’s formidable reputation as a party destination promises to keep night owls entertained in the hours of darkness. You can eat till you drop at street markets and gourmet restaurants, or come home loaded with seaweed chips, fish sauces, and dragon fruit. Bangkok is a site of shoppers’ pilgrimage, boasting an epic weekend market, malls selling everything from Marni to Massimo Dutti, tiny boutiques, and floating markets. The best part? It fits every pocket, whether you’re a backpacker or luxe jetsetter.

We made some handy notes during our recent weekend trip to Bangkok and turned it into a postcard. It may only be Wednesday but it’s never too early in the week to start planning your next quick getaway.l
