Being a man could be hard at times. With the constant struggle of maintaining the stereotype no-maintenance look, and looking presentable & well-groomed at the same time. When it comes to grooming, people mistake it for something only women should do. But in today’s fashion-conscious and competitive world, grooming is not gender biased.
It’s all about you looking good and feeling confident.
So here are few simple steps, you can take in order to ensure that when it comes to personal grooming, you are doing it right.
Hair & Beard – Keep your friends close, but your barber closer
Unless you’re Chewbacca, let the hair not grow unchecked. Every face type has a hairstyle that suits it. Find a barber who comes with experience. A stylist is an artist who will determine what cut suits you best, and your barber will do the same.
Clip your nose hair and the unsightly hair in your ears occasionally. For your facial hair, consult your stylist to find out what beard style goes with the shape of your face.
The Face & The Body
A good routine for your face is very essential. Sunburn and suntan are real problems. Given the amount of pollution and global warming, it is absolutely necessary you use a good, non-oily sunscreen with an adequate amount of SPF. Your basic skincare routine should include the use of a good quality mild face wash at least twice every day.
Using a good quality body wash with a loofah is better than using a soap since a loofah gives your body a much needed daily scrub. Carry a bottle of hand sanitizer with you, because touching your face with your hands is inevitable, so you might as well do this with sanitized hands. This would help you prevent breakouts on your face.
Teeth – The Treasure of the Pearly Whites
As basic as this is, brush your teeth twice every day. Use a mouthwash to follow up, and floss every chance you get. Flossing your teeth is an important oral hygiene practice and cleansing between your teeth helps prevent cavities and gum diseases. Most importantly, do not skip your bi-annual dentist appointments. Dental hygiene is often overlooked, but the results of doing so are very harmful in the long run.
Nails & Feet – Tarzan didn’t get everything right
Manicures and pedicures aren’t just for women. As a man, you may not require the full routine, but a visit to the salon once a month, and some basic weekly trimming at home will suffice. Always keep a good pair of nail clippers handy and clip your nails. If your toe nails are not checked, you might end up with ingrown nails, which hurt bad and can develop into something nasty.
Another big concern here is the smell of your feet. A working man wears his shoes all day long, and even though you may use a single pair of socks no more than 2 days before putting them away for laundry, spray the insides of your shoes with a good shoe deodorant, and put a bit of camphor and a pouch of dehumidifier in your shoe rack.
The Scent – Fragrance Maketh the Man
A good cologne is a man’s ultimate intimate apparel. A nice musky deodorant on the underarms, a good body mist immediately after shower, and a nice cologne to close. Refresh as necessary. Your scent usage depends upon the occasion, and the weather. Finding your right scent might take a bit of experiment and trying – but it is well worth the effort. Once you have the right perfume, dab is on your pulse points – and not on your clothes. The most prominent pulse points to have the right amount of projection include dabbing on your neck, your wrists, and the back of your knees.

There is no magic potion. At the end of the day, it’s all about how consistent you are at taking care of yourself. You don’t have to be in public to take your grooming and skincare seriously. Everything you’re doing, you are doing it for yourself. Doing it right, and doing it regularly isn’t all that big of a deal – but the results surely are.
